Bush on Iraq: That Was Then, This Is Now

The Downing Street Memo and a host of new British documents are increasingly focusing national attention on the duplicity and incompetence of President Bush’s Iraq war planning. With criticism building, poll numbers plummeting and facing defections from his own party, the President used today’s weekly radio address to begin a new PR offensive to bolster support for Iraq policies.

If that performance is any indication, George Bush has moved from profound deception and deep denial to outright fantasy. In one short address, Bush resurrected the fiction that Iraq was somehow complicit in 9/11, while pretending his May 1, 2003 victory speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln never happened:

(Continue reading for quotes and sources.)

    Why War with Iraq?

    • "No, we've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th." President Bush, September 17, 2004.

    • "I would tell them [families of fallen soldiers] the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the war against those who caused the deaths on 9/11 is necessary."President Bush, October 22, 2004.

    • "We went to war [in Iraq] because we were attacked."President Bush, June 18, 2005.

Was There An Al Qaeda Link?

    • "It [Iraq] has aided, trained and harbored terrorists, including operatives of al Qaeda." President Bush, March 17, 2003.

    • "The liberation of Iraq is a crucial advance in the campaign against terror. We've removed an ally of al Qaeda, and cut off a source of terrorist funding."President Bush, May 1, 2003.

    • "No, we've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th." President Bush, September 17, 2004.

    Have We Prevailed?

    • "Mission Accomplished."President Bush's Backdrop, May 1, 2003.

    • "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed."President Bush, May 1, 2003.

    • "This mission isn't easy, and it will not be accomplished overnight."President Bush, June 18, 2005.

Enough of your lefty propaganda. The President is abolsutely right; we're fighting the terrorists in Iraq so we don't have to fight them here.

Oh, come on Loretta - open your eyes just a little.

Posted by Michaelbrock at June 19, 2005 10:22 PM

Loretta, I have to say that is a profoundly morally bankrupt argument. Even if one accepted the premise, which I don't, that going to war with Iraq had made us safer, what you're saying is that the innocent people of Iraq, who never harmed or threatened us, should be willing or even required to die so that we can live. They matter less than us. They are, in effect, subhuman. That's just reprehensible.

Posted by katman at June 20, 2005 12:35 AM

"Lefty propaganda"? Come now, Loretta. The definition of a "lefty" is NOT "one who opposes the current neo-conservative administration." I am as conservative as they come, and BECAUSE I am conservative, I oppose this ridiculous war.

You know, conservatives used to be against big government--both at home and abroad.

Plus, the whole notion that being in Iraq makes us safer here at home is one massive post hoc fallacy. Only those who want to be duped can possibly fall for it.

Posted by bartman at June 20, 2005 09:46 AM

    From the liars radio address:

"Our troops are fighting these terrorists in Iraq so you will not have to face them here at home. "

This is the biggest deception that he continues to peddle and anyone who believes it is foolish.

He and those who repeat it want us to believe that some jihadi who "hitches a ride" to Iraq to fight would 'somehow' just pop-up in the USA ready to do us harm if it were not for Iraq. Sure thing.

First of all how are they going to cross the ocean without being detected? After all we have all these watch lists and other devices that are supposed to be protecting us. And then how are they going to enter our country because we supposedly have all the protections in place that are supposed to be protecting us?

Are we protected here or aren't we? He tells us we are but yet makes the case that Iraq is necessary in that effort. So does that mean when we finally leave Iraq that we will not be safe anymore?

His whole premise is not only ridiculous - it is just another lie.

Wow, Leftist propaganda now includes quoting Bush. Will the left stop at nothing!?!?!

Posted by Maggie at June 20, 2005 02:21 PM

Damn. You know, it really amazes me how embarassingly STUPID some people (like ol' Loretta) are. It's kinda funny how you can present them with straight-up quotes that Duh-Buh-Yuh said, clearly representing a contradiction, and these Archie Bunker slobs still won't see the truth. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID people.

    Loretta,
Your comments, and Bush's justification, are quite disturbing because Hitler used the same arguments to invade Poland. The average German believed that Poland was on the brink of attacking Germany...sound familiar? Pre-emptive war is hardly ever justifiable--and certainly not in this case.

Posted by BillG at June 20, 2005 02:56 PM

Man, poor Loretta; don't forget when arguing against Bush supporters that these are sincere, decent minded people who love their country, but have been politically swayed by the most powerful and efficient propoganda leviathon since Big Brother. The Ultra-Conservative Right has merged with Christian Fundamentalism to create a mass media PR machine the likes of which the world, let alone the US, has never seen before. If you were a Republican before 9/11, you were probably a rabid Republican after 9/11, which made you a perfect candidate for the twisted mindfuck to come. Bush et al have been ruthless in their ability to provide the country and the world with an endless stream of mis-information, deliberately intended to obfuscate the reality of their utter incompetence and now it seems, criminality as well. As frustrating as it is to admit, this administration has been masterful in its duplicity; the Lorettas of your once proud nation never stood a chance.

More like we're creating the terrorists in Iraq because we can't create them here.

Hey Loretta, why couldn't we just fight them in Afghanistan where they actually were and still are. Iraq was not a base for terrorists that attacked us. Now we opened the door in Iraq and they flooded in. What sense does that make. It was a oil grab, which has only raised the price of oil for all of us, and killed a lot of good people and increased our national debt. That is in essense what your war in Iraq is all about.

if only the likes of lowrenta were barren....

i imagine that, were all this to be occuring under a democrat administration, we'd be hearing from a lot more timothy mcveigh types.

Posted by KEvron at June 21, 2005 12:40 AM

Loretta, I will make sure to tell my friend, mother of a soldier who got his brains blown out last week in Ramadi, that no "terriss" will be at his funeral thanks to W.

Posted by mbc at June 21, 2005 08:50 AM

This is for Loretta. You couldn't tell a lie from YOUR Prez Dubya if he walked up to you and slapped you in the face with it! I still can't believe how many people think that border-line idiot is telling the truth. Give me a break, his I.Q. is 82!

Posted by Grandpa Eddie at June 21, 2005 07:47 PM

I have my own recent Loretta-like favorite.

On NPR this morning, an Arab "expert" from one of the right-wing "think-tanks" was complaining that jihadists from Saudi Arabia were passing Syria to join the insurgency in Iraq.

He recommended that we consider cross-border raids and getting much tougher on Syria.

Okay. Now, work with me here.

We know that 18 of 9-11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia. We know that Saudi royals supported/ bought/ paid-off various Wahabi and fundamentalist groups and organizations directly associated with Islamic terrorism. We know that Saudi Arabi stonewalled our investigations into such terrorist networks. Etc.

So now that terrorists from Saudi Arabia are allegedly appearing in Iraq, the solution is to invade Syria?

Wouldn't it make more sense to get tough with Saudi Arabia?

Well, not if you're neocon or a devout follower of Bandar "W" Bush.

Better to fight them the neocons don't like rather than them who are actually threatening our nation.

Posted by Thom H at June 27, 2005 01:03 PM

    Thom,
Your analogy on Saudi Arabia supports the fact that Bushco and the Saudi's were the ones who attacked America.
    Thanks.
