Giuliani Telling Tales on Terrorism Record

Self-proclaimed terrorist fighter Rudy Giuliani is telling tall tales again. Just days after the Village Voice thoroughly refuted Giuliani's claims about his supposedly central role prosecuting the 1985 murder case of Leon Klinghoffer by PLO terrorists aboard the cruise ship Achille Lauro, the GOP presidential front-runner is at it again. In Ohio on Thursday, the former New York mayor favorably compared himself to World Trade Center rescue workers on and after 9/11:

"I was at ground zero as often, if not more, than most of the workers...I was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things they were exposed to. So in that sense, I'm one of them."

Following up on the Village Voice's demolition of Giuliani's past descriptions of himself as a terror-buster extraordinaire, Perrspectives went back and looked at the record. Contrary to claims we can expect Rudy Giuliani to make during campaign '08, the self-anointed mayor of 9/11 played no role in any of the following:

    • The Whiskey Rebellion. Giuliani was not in fact President Washington's point-man in bringing the insurgent farmers of Pennsylvania's Monongahela Valley to justice in 1794.
    • The Barbary Pirates. We found no instance of Giuliani ever mentioning "radical Islamic terrorism" when President Jefferson dispatched the U.S. Navy to fight off the Arab brigands between 1801 and 1805.
    • John Brown and the Harper's Ferry Raid. Giuliani's name appears nowhere in the court records surrounding the 1859 conviction of the radical abolitionist. Of course, Guliani would only mention this during the Southern primaries.
    • The Prosecution of John Wilkes Booth. No doubt, Giuliani would claim that the U.S. attorney for the DC district had jurisdiction over the case of the assassin of Abraham Lincoln.
    • Nathan Bedford Forrest and the Ku Klux Klan. Rudy was absent from federal efforts to monitor the Klan in the late 1800's. Of course, Giuliani would never mention this during the Southern primaries.
    • The Assassination of Tsar Alexander III. There are no records indicating Giuliani and Associates assisted the Russian authorities in St. Petersburg following the killing of the Tsar by leftist terrorists in 1894.
    • The Palmer Raids. There is no historical documentation proving that the post-World War I crackdown on American socialists and their sympathizers was previously called "The Giuliani Raids."
    • The Capture of Che Guevara. Travel records show that Giuliani was hanging out with friends at Fire Island in the summer of 1967, and not with the CIA in the jungles of Bolivia.

This is just a small sampling of Rudy Giuliani's non-factor as a foe of terrorists and extremists worldwide. Should you encounter evidence of Giuliani's role in thwarting the IRA, the PLO, the Red Brigades, the ANC, or even the Boy Scouts, by all means let us know.

Oh my God. That is a side-splitter.

"I was at ground zero as often, if not more, than most of the workers...I was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things they were exposed to. So in that sense, I'm one of them."
