Cornyn Appears with McCain Wednesday, Slams Him Saturday

When he's not threatening judges or comparing same-sex marriage to bestiality, Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn keeps busy by raising hypocrisy to an art form. On Wednesday, Cornyn joined John McCain and John Hagee on stage at the Texas pastor's endorsement event. Just three days later, Cornyn lambasted McCain, comparing his grudging support for the prospective nominee of his party to the grieving process.

In San Antonio last Wednesday, Senator Cornyn accompanied John Hagee to the podium as the End Times televangelist praised the Arizona Senator as "a man of principle." But while McCain claimed to be "very honored" by Hagee's support, after Saturday he no doubt feels less enthusiastic about the backing of john Cornyn.

At the annual Dallas County Republican Party Reagan Day dinner on Saturday, Cornyn groused about the GOP's new standard bearer. Cornyn, who endorsed McCain's candidacy only after the implosion of his first choice, Rudy Giuliani, compared backing his party's frontrunner to death and the grieving process. As the Dallas Morning News detailed:

"I sort of liken it to a grieving process. You come to acceptance," said U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, ticking off the conventionally accepted stages of mourning.

Such rhetorical flair is usually reserved for Cornyn's enemies. In 2005, the Texas Senator decried same-sex marriage and "a world where that union of man and box turtle is on the same legal footing as man and wife." In the aftermath of the Terri Schiavo episode just a few months later, Cornyn took to the Senate floor to issue a none-too-thinly-veiled threat to so-called "activist judges:"

"I don't know if there is a cause-and-effect connection, but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country...And I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters, on some occasions, where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in, engage in violence."

In his defense, John Cornyn's trepidation when it comes to McCain may date back to their March 2007 clash over immigration reform. Then, a furious McCain lashed out at Cornyn, "F**k you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room." In any event, John Cornyn has now publicly stated that he will hold his nose and support John McCain in November. Lord knows what Cornyn says about him in private.

Cornyn is a buffoon. But if I got f-bombed, I'd hold a grudge, too.

Kind of like watching a knife fight between your ex-boss and your ex-wife. Hard to figure out who to root for.
